Veteran goalkeeper Jon Conway retired Tuesday, ending his 12-year Major League Soccer career.

Conway, 34, started his career with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2000, and won two MLS Cups before he left the club after the 2005 season. Conway then played for Red Bull New York, Toronto FC and the Chicago Fire later in his career.

He also spent time with Chivas USA, although he did not make an MLS appearance with the club, and was most recently selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the MLS Re-Dntry Draft.

“After talking to [L.A.] Coach [Bruce] Arena about the opportunity in LA and evaluating my options, it just felt like a good time to transition out of the game,” said Conway.

“It’s been a pleasure to witness the growth of the sport and the league in the United States.”

Conway made 88 appearances, including 85 starts, during his career. He had 23 shutouts. (Chicago Tribune)

Yesterday was a pretty sucky day, for certain. Knowing since the beginning of October that our captain and the greatest striker in MLS history, Juan Pablo Angel, wasn’t returning to the New York Red Bulls was a kick in the gut as it was. In my head, I wanted him to stay in the league, but avoid any of our main rivals (which happened!). Instead, he landed in the lap of Bruce Arena, the man responsible from stealing him away Aston Villa all those years ago. So, if he signs with the Galaxy, I know that the wife won’t want to part with those tickets this year.

We’ve already seen dumb keepers and their dumb, dumb, dumb premature celebrations costing themselves a penalty kick save. Now, we get to see another “lack of concentration” cost this keeper as well. As was pointed out by the team at Dirty Tackle, “this goalkeeper apparently had a bit of good luck on his side. According to the YouTube user who uploaded the video, his team ended up winning anyway.”

Lucky bastard.

French international and former Arsenal and FC Barcelona superstar, Thierry Henry, will make his MLS debut tonight for our New York Red Bulls tonight in Houston, Texas. After watching him over the past weekend in the Barclays New York Challenge, we ripped Barca off. REALLY. Dude still has so very much to offer and he’s OURS. Take that, LA.

Hopefully, we will get our first taste of how Juan Pablo Angel and Henry will work together up front – let’s predict a result:

After a string of losses and a sudden inability to create anything substantial offensively, Red Bull New York rebounded yesterday with a 3-1 win over Italian Serie A great, Juventus. Granted, according to David Trezeguet, “these matches count for little,” it was still a great day of soccer from both the Italian side and our own Bulls (who I only call the “Pink Cows” when they can’t seem to effing score or play like arse).

Greg Sutton was solid in goal, making the saves required of him and despite the late Amauri goal, he was pretty good. We’ll obviously be seeing him again on Wednesday in the US Open Cup match against Colorado, so hopefully the team we fielded Sunday will be back in front of him.

While Conor Chinn was Man of the Match, it should be noted that Irvinho (you people can call him Irving Garcia, but this kid is a beast!), played another bonkers game. He’s earned some starts in league play and maybe bringing Dane Richards off the bench as a super sub might be the boost we need right now.

Allow me to say “eff”. Glad I didn’t put money on my Spain-Germany Final prediction.

Michael Ballack, midfielder for Chelsea and Germany captain, will miss the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup due to an ankle injury. He suffered the injury in the English FA Cup final on Saturday, May 15, 2010 after a tackle from Kevin-Prince Boateng. Ballack has played in several World Cups and was expected to be a major part of the German squad in the midfield. Below is the official statement from the German Football Association (DFB).

The tomogram showed a torn interior ligament and a partial rupture of the syndesmosis ligament of his right ankle, which for the time being will have to be immobilized and put in a cast. Ballack will then wear a specially designed shoe for two weeks. German team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt said, that according to today’s diagnosis, Ballack can look forward to a complete recovery, but that a minimum eight weeks will be required before the German skipper may consider returning to regular training.
